R/GA workshop comes “true”

Blog: July 9th, 2008

“Getty Images, one of the world’s largest media licensing companies, has partnered with Flickr to add a broader selection of pictures to its online catalog. Getty will hand-pick a number of Flickr members to participate in the program, with a goal of acquiring thousands of images in the next few months.” - Techcrunch

Me, Simone Magurno and Aina Cecilie Ørebech had the same suggestion during a work shop at R/GA London a couple of months a go. The brief was to develop a new service for gettyimages that would increase number of visitors to gettyimages.com.

Our solution ended up being a media neutral light table like service pulling images, videos and music from sources such as flickr, zooomer, youtube and blip.tv and combining them with Getty’s own content. Now it appears like they are taking the first step in that direction. It would be interesting to see gettyimages.com function as a quality stamp or filter for flickr images offering their customers a wider variety of images to choose from. This could help establish Getty as the source of all online quality images. I think it might be smart not to charge anything for the flickr images and see this as a smart brand building exercise and not just as a new source of income.

It going to be interesting to see which revenue model they choose to work from and how they will adapt their site to their new content. We’ll just have to wait and see.

H&M through Tailsweep

Blog: May 21st, 2008

Stumbled upon this massive H&M banner delivered by the relatively new blog ad network Tailsweep the other day.

Tailsweep definatly feels interesting in a lot of different ways. Both from an advertising point and from a site owners perspective. They’re service is “based on the assumption that the total number of visitors on the large amount of small and medium sized sites, are equivalent to the total amount of visitors to the fewer large sites on the Internet today.” At the moment their basically putting ads on a lot of swedish blogs. Check it out.

Visual blog for Topshop

Blog: March 21st, 2008

During my time in London in February I spent a couple of days at Poke. Among a lot of other things a sat in on a few meetings regarding the new site for “Kate Moss for Topshop“. The site was released just the other day and I really like the concept behind it.

“Fashion is primarily a visual thing”. With that in mind Poke sat out to create an blog like experience mimicking the way we as costumers behave when we shop for clothes. We don’t read any descriptions of the garments, we just flip through larger number of them until we see something we like whether it’s the pattern of a shirt or the fabric of a par of pants. We browse, quickly. I think that Poke has done a really nice job combining close ups of fabrics and details with gorgeous inspirational images or videos from behind the scenes of fashion shows and photo shoots.

To me the whole site feels really smart and amazingly simple. When it come to fashions blogs i totally agree on that “words are just there to make the reader feel grown up…”. The site also makes a great source of images for bloggers and such and is probably gone generate a whole lot of buzz in the fashion blogosphere.

The one thing I would have liked to see is the ability to embed videos published on the site directly on blogs using a custom Topshop video player. I think this could have been yet another way to get the online fashion community to help spread the news the new collections.

London, work shadowing, interviews and interesting conversations

Blog: March 15th, 2008

I’ve just finished first of two project management specialization’s modules at Hyper Island. This was what the school called a Client Pitch Module where I where supposed to focus on strategy, business and client relations. I decide to spend a month in London visiting a couple of agencies to observe and do some short interviews to see how they are structured.

I asked questions about things such as organization, client process, project life cycle, hiring issues and strategies (And of course tired to pick up some tips and tricks).

During me time in London i visited Poke, Glue, Reading Room, Swede, De-construct, The Other Media, Agency Rebublic, and Profero. The setup was different depending on the company. At some agencies I spent a couple of hours doing interviews with project managers, creative directors, account managers, managing directors and so on and at some I spent a few days work shadowing project managers.

The experience has been really valuable for me as it has helped me sort out what I’m interested in working with during my 7 month internship. I want to learn a lot more about working efficiently with projects running over multiple medias involving a number of people with different talent. I want to stay close to the creative process and be able to follow a project from start to end while making sure that me colleagues have everything they need to perform at their best. I would love to work with a combination of national and international clients in high pace agency that applies a strategic and creative take on every brief.

I’ve of course also learned a lot about different ways of planning and structuring projects, the importance of making the clients feel a part of their project and a whole lot of other things.

I also came to the conclusion that the thing that’s probably gone help me the most in my future work is that I’m able to understand and work efficiently with both designers and developers, thanks to my design and online production background.

I’m really looking forward to get started.
