R/GA workshop comes “true”

“Getty Images, one of the world’s largest media licensing companies, has partnered with Flickr to add a broader selection of pictures to its online catalog. Getty will hand-pick a number of Flickr members to participate in the program, with a goal of acquiring thousands of images in the next few months.” - Techcrunch

Me, Simone Magurno and Aina Cecilie Ørebech had the same suggestion during a work shop at R/GA London a couple of months a go. The brief was to develop a new service for gettyimages that would increase number of visitors to gettyimages.com.

Our solution ended up being a media neutral light table like service pulling images, videos and music from sources such as flickr, zooomer, youtube and blip.tv and combining them with Getty’s own content. Now it appears like they are taking the first step in that direction. It would be interesting to see gettyimages.com function as a quality stamp or filter for flickr images offering their customers a wider variety of images to choose from. This could help establish Getty as the source of all online quality images. I think it might be smart not to charge anything for the flickr images and see this as a smart brand building exercise and not just as a new source of income.

It going to be interesting to see which revenue model they choose to work from and how they will adapt their site to their new content. We’ll just have to wait and see.
